We are a group of multidisciplinary dancers and fine artists based in London, UK. Meditation Dance School was founded in 1996 as a platform for Marita Sanguinetti’s innovative performances, installations wellness practices, which combine dance, fine art and specifically chosen music. Since its inception, the school has been characterised by its unique approach, drawing parallels between dance, fine art and life for the general population.
Our work is deeply inquiring, often exploring new methods and their impact on performance, health and longevity. The school aims to contribute to the growing body of knowledge in dance research, ultimately enhancing the quality of training and offering valuable insights that inform the training of professional dancers while promoting healthy practices in everyday life for the general population.
Marita created Meditation Dance as a coming together of different dance disciplines, related arts, and meditation and yoga practices. These were primarily inspired by the Denishawn principle of ‘tension and relaxation’ and include the Martha Graham technique, a form Marita has worked with since she was a young student herself.
Martha Graham understood that movement originates in the tension of a contracted muscle and continues in the flow of energy released as the muscle relaxes. Marita saw a link between this way of understanding movement and the principles of the ancient practices of yoga and meditation. For the past 20 years she has researched the techniques of Integral Hatha Yoga and meditation.
Above all, Marita guides and encourages dancers to practise in ways that promote their health and wellbeing.
